The FAIR principles are an important aspect of research data management (RDM). These principles are designed to ensure sustainable research data management by preparing and storing data in such a way that it can be reused by others. FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable.
The FAIR principles focus on features that facilitate the exchange of data. They ignore ethical issues, power differences and historical contexts.
For this reason, the Global Indigenous Data Alliance (GIDA) has established the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance as an important complement to the FAIR principles. CARE refers to:
- Collective Benefit
- Authority to Control
- Responsibility
- Ethics
